Exodus 3:4-5

4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” 5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

Why did God tell Moses to take off his shoes at the bush?
He said it was holy ground.
Was it because He didn’t want Moses to taint the ground with his shoes? I doubt it.
Could it be because He knew Moses would want to get as close to the holy as possible?
Spending time in the holy presence of God is how we are changed to become more holy.

What is holiness?  This passage tends to bring light to the possibility that holiness is not just sinfulness, but there is much more to it.  How can dirt be sinless?  Holiness can also mean power and mean to be filled with the presence of God.  God’s presence was definitely there and there was great power too.  The ground was saturated with God’s presence and power.  God is that powerful.  So taking off Moses’ shoes brought him that much closer to the power and presence of God.

We have opportunities to be doing things that will help us to become closer to the holy, that means spending time with people who are close to God.  This also has to do with what we watch, what we listen to, etc.  I am not suggesting a legalistic way of living, but simply asking the question, are my actions demonstrating someone who has a desire to be touching the Holy?  How close are you to touching holy ground?
