The other day I had a conversation with a graduate who was very zealous and excited about God. During the conversation, it became clear to me that he enjoyed arguing about things in the Bible and would occasionally toss something out that sounded wrong in order to draw someone into an argument. Some of the things he said didn’t have anything to do with the topic we were discussing, and I realized after awhile that this was not an edifying conversation. I realized I was arguing with him and my pride was rising up and the direction of the conversation was becoming a battle of wits. It is amazing to me how you can have a conversation about things in the Bible, and not really have it be edifying or building others up. No wonder in 2 Timothy chapter two he says “23Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. ”
Truly nothing good comes from arguing, even if it is about God’s word. Try to focus your conversation on the goodness of God, or the ways in which He has been teaching you or how you have been growing.
